The idea
Every fan knows to cheer for their own team. But on any given night, dozens of other games quietly shift your team's playoff math. When a division rival loses, you gain ground. When a wild-card contender wins, the race tightens. CheerAssist does that bookkeeping for you and turns it into one simple answer: who to root for tonight.
How it works
- Pick your favorite team in any supported league.
- Each day, CheerAssist pulls the full schedule and current standings.
- For every game, it works out whether the result helps or hurts your team — rooting against the division rivals and playoff contenders chasing the same spot — and ranks each game by how much it matters.
- Games that could push your team toward (or away from) a playoff spot are flagged Critical; games that don't affect your race are marked No stakes (and hidden by default).
- How much a rival matters is measured by how close they are to your team in the standings, and by how much season is left to make the ground up — so a rival who is out of reach stops being a rooting interest, however good their record looks.
- The slate knows where the league is in its calendar. Preseason games are shown but marked as counting for nothing; once the playoffs start, other games are read as "who would you rather meet next".
- If your team is eliminated, the picks flip: CheerAssist switches to whatever gives your team the best draft position — which is very often not losing. Each league is different, and the differences are real: the NHL still rewards finishing last outright, but the NBA's new 3-2-1 lottery actively penalises its three worst teams, so fourth worst is the target; MLB's bottom three share the same odds, so there's no gain below third worst; and the PWHL's Gold Plan awards the first overall pick to whichever eliminated team earns the most points the rest of the way, so there you simply keep winning.
